Ascom FreeNET Voice Over WiFi (VoWiFi) The Ascom FreeNET VoWiFi Solution is a standards-based clinical-grade wireless telephone solution that combines voice, messaging and personal alarm capabilities into a single, easy to use communication device, the i75 Medic handset. FreeNET, the industry’s first 802.11b/g solution, couples mission-critical full-duplex voice communications with powerful, yet flexible, messaging integrations with existing systems. The Ascom FreeNET solution consists of four key components:
The Ascom FreeNET VoWiFi system is designed to provide clinical-grade communications through its unique combination of voice, messaging, and personal alarm capabilities. Since FreeNET uses IEEE standards rather than proprietary methods for security and QoS, system administration is simplified, especially during expansions and upgrades to the wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). The Portable Device Manager (PDM) enables central management for all handsets, performs over-the-air software updates, and allows for the instant download of an individual’s personal settings (including phone number and phonebook entries). For healthcare, the i75 Medic’s four distinct priority tones and instantaneous display for incoming messages help nurses know when to interrupt a call with a doctor to respond to a higher priority call like a Code Blue or continue talking while the system automatically escalates a lower priority call to a backup caregiver.
Every hospital staff member can benefit from the convenience of FreeNET’s mobile communication solution. Nurses save time by calling aides, housekeepers, etc. directly rather than having to walk the halls to find help. Doctor’s can return a page directly to the nurse who called rather than wait on hold while the nurse is located. Utilization Management Officers receive returned calls from insurance companies on the first attempt. Security officers have instant access to police and fire departments and are always accessible to hospital staff and fellow officers in an emergency. Hospital Administrators can increase interaction with patients and staff without missing important phone calls.
